In March 2014 the Spanish Government (Cabinet) issued a royal decree requiring the registration of carbon footprints, compensation and projects absorbing carbon dioxide. The royal decree entered into force in May 2014, with the launch of the emissions registry. This was accompanied by the publication of supporting documents, calculation tools and registration forms required for its operation. This voluntary record was created to promote the calculation and reduction of the carbon footprint of Spanish organizations, as well as promote projects that improve the GHG absorption (sink) capacity of Spain. It serves to support climate change mitigation.
