Estidama Pearl Building Rating System (PBRS), 2010

United Arab Emirates Current 2010

Estidama is the sustainability initiative of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It runs a Pearl Rating Systems (PRS) that deals specifically with the built environment and its performance in relation to economic, environmental, cultural and social aspects. The aim of the Pearl Building Rating System (PBRS) is to promote the development of sustainable buildings. The PBRS encourages water, energy and waste minimization, local material use and aims to improve supply chains for sustainable and recycled materials and products. An Executive Council Order of May 2010 states all new buildings must meet the 1 Pearl requirements starting in September 2010, whilst all government funded buildings must achieve minimum 2 Pearls. The Estidama PRS became a mandatory requirement for all new developments within the Emirate. The PRS initiated substantial changes in the way the construction industry plans, designs, builds and measure performance for disclosure to the authorities across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
