Summary

This Decree sets out the process and requirements associated with Environmental Impact Assessments in Nigeria. All those entities involved in projects or activities that are listed in the attached Schedule are to complete an Environmental Impact Assessment, unless stated elsewhere, before the commencement of said project or activity. The Decree outlines the scope of the required assessment, which includes the business context, potential impacts, alternatives or mitigating efforts, uncertainties in the assessment, and a shorter, more accessible version of the information of the assessment. This final aspect of the assessment is to allow for increased public engagement, which shall be acknowledged when the authorities pass judgement on the activity/project.
