Summary
Marine Pollution Prevention Act, passed in 2008, sets out the rules and expectations of all vessels that enter the waters of Sri Lanka as well as setting up and formulating the remit of the Marine Environment Protection Authority. As part of these regulations, vessels must keep an oil record book, which is to log all oil, harmful substances and other pollutants that are loaded, transferred, discharged, disposed or leaked. In cases where oil or other pollutant is discharged, escapes or is dumped in Sri Lankan waters, the operator is report to the authorities with full details of the incident. Moreover, it is required that Contingency Plans be approved by the Marine Environment Protection Authority within three months of coming into operation.
